- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup milk (non-dairy milk for vegan option)
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
- Vegetable oil for frying
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2-3 tbsp milk (non-dairy milk for vegan option)
- Food coloring (optional)
- Sprinkles or other toppings (optional)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and applesauce.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
- Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
- Remove the donuts from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Add food coloring if desired.
- Dip each donut into the glaze, allowing any excess to drip off. Place the glazed donuts on a wire rack to set.
- If desired, decorate the donuts with sprinkles or other toppings while the glaze is still wet.
- Allow the glaze to set completely before serving.
