Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup milk (non-dairy milk for vegan option)
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tbsp milk (non-dairy milk for vegan option)
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Sprinkles or other toppings (optional)

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and applesauce.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
  • Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
  • Remove the donuts from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Add food coloring if desired.
  • Dip each donut into the glaze, allowing any excess to drip off. Place the glazed donuts on a wire rack to set.
  • If desired, decorate the donuts with sprinkles or other toppings while the glaze is still wet.
  • Allow the glaze to set completely before serving.
