Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup milk (or non-dairy milk)
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • Vegetable oil for frying or non-stick spray for baking
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tbsp milk (or non-dairy milk)
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Sprinkles or other toppings (optional)

Directions

  1. 1

Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.

  2. 2

In another bowl, mix milk, vegetable oil, vanilla, and applesauce.

  3. 3

Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring gently until combined.

  4. 4

For frying: Heat oil in a deep pot to 375°F (190°C). For baking: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a donut pan.

  5. 5

Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, cooking 2-3 min per side until golden. Alternatively, fill donut pan molds halfway and bake for 10-12 min.

  6. 6

Transfer cooked donuts to a paper towel-lined plate or wire rack to cool.

  7. 7

Whisk powdered sugar with milk to create glaze. Add food coloring if desired.

  8. 8

Dip each donut in glaze, let excess drip off, and add toppings. Allow glaze to set before serving.

Chef's tip

For a healthier version, try the baked option. Ensure to not overcrowd the fryer to maintain a consistent temperature.
