About this recipe

This updated comfort casserole provides a warm and satisfying meal with layers of creamy mashed potatoes, flavorful beef, and melted cheese topped with a crispy finish. It's a delightful one-pan dish that blends tradition with modern culinary flair.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 can (10.75 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs

Directions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 2

In a large skillet, cook ground beef, onion, and garlic on medium heat until beef is browned. Drain excess fat.

  3. 3

Stir in peas, cream of mushroom soup, milk, and sour cream. Simmer until heated through.

  4. 4

In a saucepan, melt butter. Stir in flour, salt, and pepper, and cook until smooth. Gradually whisk in milk until thickened.

  5. 5

Layer half of the mashed potatoes in a 9x13 inch baking dish. Top with half of the beef mixture and half of the cheese.

  6. 6

Repeat the layers with remaining potatoes, beef mixture, and cheese. Sprinkle panko breadcrumbs evenly on top.

  7. 7

Bake until heated through and top is golden and bubbly, about 30-35 minutes.

Chef's tip

For added flavor, consider mixing in some Worcestershire sauce to the beef mixture. This recipe is perfect to prepare ahead and refrigerate until ready to bake.
