- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup corn syrup
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 tsp cream of tartar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Food coloring (optional)
- Powdered sugar (for dusting)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, water, cream of tartar, and salt.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until sugar dissolves.
- Stop stirring and let mixture come to a boil.
- Boil until candy thermometer reaches 300°F (hard crack stage).
- Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and food coloring (if using).
- Pour mixture onto a greased baking sheet and let cool.
- Once cool, break into pieces and dust with powdered sugar.
