Modern Old-Fashioned Apple Pie Bars

About this recipe

These apple pie bars offer the cozy flavors of a traditional apple pie wrapped in a convenient bar form. With a buttery crust and a warmly spiced apple filling, they are ideal for gatherings or a weekend treat. Whether paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or enjoyed on their own, these bars capture the essence of comfort in each bite.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups apples, peeled and diced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Directions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a 9x13 inch baking dish with parchment paper.

  2. 2

In a large bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. 3

Add the beaten egg to the flour mixture, mixing until a dough forms. Press the dough into the prepared baking dish.

  4. 4

Bake the crust for 15 minutes or until lightly golden.

  5. 5

In another bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, melted butter, vanilla, and apple cider vinegar. Stir in the apples and spices.

  6. 6

Pour the apple mixture over the pre-baked crust, spreading evenly.

  7. 7

Bake for an additional 25 minutes or until the filling is set and the top is golden brown.

  8. 8

Allow to cool completely in the dish before cutting into bars.

Chef's tip

To enhance flavor, consider using a mix of different apple varieties. This can balance sweetness and tartness while adding complexity to the filling.
