Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup hot water
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Alternate adding the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
- Stir in the hot water and vanilla extract until the batter is smooth.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
