Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • Alternate adding the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
  • Stir in the hot water and vanilla extract until the batter is smooth.
  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
