Modern Japanese Flag Cake

About this recipe

This updated version of the Japanese Flag Cake combines moist layers and vibrant colors to create a visually stunning and delicious dessert. Inspired by the Japanese flag, it's a perfect centerpiece for your next celebration, blending traditional aesthetics with modern culinary techniques.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon black cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • Fresh strawberries for decoration

Directions

  1. 1

Preheat oven to 350°F and grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.

  3. 3

Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in vanilla extract.

  4. 4

In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, alternating with milk.

  5. 5

Divide batter evenly, coloring one portion with red food coloring and the other with black cocoa powder.

  6. 6

Pour batters into prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

  7. 7

Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then remove to wire racks to cool completely.

  8. 8

Whip cream until stiff peaks form, then frost cooled cakes. Arrange sliced strawberries on top to resemble the Japanese flag.

Chef's tip

Ensure eggs are at room temperature before starting to achieve a better batter consistency. Consider using black cocoa powder for a rich color without relying heavily on food dye.
