About this recipe

Experience the perfect blend of crisp and tang with these fried green tomatoes. Perfect as a side dish or a snack, the green tomatoes are coated with a seasoned cornmeal mixture and fried to golden perfection. Enjoy them at summer cookouts or as a comforting appetizer.

Ingredients

  • 4 large green tomatoes
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Directions

  1. 1

Slice the green tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds and pat them dry.

  2. 2

In a shallow bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, panko bread crumbs, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and cayenne pepper.

  3. 3

In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and buttermilk.

  4. 4

Dip each tomato slice into the flour mixture, then into the egg mixture, and back into the flour mixture for an even coating.

  5. 5

Heat a generous amount of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

  6. 6

Fry the tomato slices in batches, cooking about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.

  7. 7

Transfer the fried green tomatoes to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

  8. 8

Serve hot with your favorite buttermilk dressing or dipping sauce.

Chef's tip

These fried green tomatoes are best enjoyed fresh and hot. For added flavor, consider pairing them with a spicy remoulade sauce.
