Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup boiling water
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- In a small bowl, mix together the cocoa powder and boiling water until smooth. Add the cocoa mixture to the butter mixture and mix well.
- Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Mix until just combined.
- Fold in the chopped walnuts and chocolate chips, if desired.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Serve and enjoy!
