Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow moong dal
  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 medium tomato, chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 cups water
  • Optional: 1 green chili, chopped
  • Optional: Chopped vegetables like carrots, peas, or beans

Directions

    Rinse and soak the moong dal and rice together for 15 minutes.

    Heat ghee in a large pot over medium flame.

    Add cumin seeds, let them splutter before adding onions and garlic.

    Sauté until onions turn translucent; add turmeric, coriander, and garam masala.

    Stir in chopped tomatoes and cook until they're soft.

    Mix in drained dal and rice, stirring to coat them with spices.

    Pour in 4 cups of water and add salt. Add chopped vegetables if using.
