About this recipe

This Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole elevates the traditional French dish with layers of tender chicken, savory ham, and creamy mozzarella, all topped with a crisp breadcrumb crust. Perfect for a comforting family meal that's both elegant and easy to prepare.

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 8 slices of ham
  • 8 slices of mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup of panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup of grated parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup of unsalted butter
  • 2 cups of whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. 1

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter a 9x13 inch baking dish.

  2. 2

Layer chicken breasts in the baking dish, followed by ham and mozzarella slices.

  3. 3

In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until it forms a paste.

  4. 4

Slowly whisk in milk, mustard, lemon juice, and garlic powder. Cook while whisking until sauce thickens.

  5. 5

Season sauce with salt and pepper, then pour it evenly over the chicken and ham layers.

  6. 6

Mix panko breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese, sprinkle over the top of the dish.

  7. 7

Bake uncovered for 40 minutes or until top is golden brown and chicken is cooked through.

  8. 8

Let cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Chef's tip

For added flavor, consider using smoked ham and freshly grated mozzarella. Serve with a simple green salad for a complete meal.
