  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 1 lb chicken, cut into pieces
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tbsp biryani masala
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 cup chopped cilantro
  • 1/2 cup fried onions
  • 4 cups water
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  • 1. Rinse the basmati rice until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for 30 minutes, then drain.
  • 2. In a bowl, marinate the chicken with yogurt, biryani masala, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Let it sit for at least 1 hour.
  • 3. In a large pot, heat some oil and fry the sliced onions until golden brown. Remove half of the fried onions and set aside for garnishing.
  • 4. Add the marinated chicken to the pot and cook until the chicken is browned.
  • 5. Layer the soaked rice over the chicken, then add water. Cover and cook until the rice is tender and the chicken is cooked through.
  • 6. Garnish with chopped cilantro and fried onions before serving.
