About this recipe

This contemporary take on the classic cheesy pasta bake is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Combining savory marinara sauce with layers of gooey mozzarella and Parmesan, this dish is both comforting and family-friendly. Ideal for a cozy weeknight dinner or a sumptuous weekend meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb pasta (ziti or penne recommended)
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 jar marinara sauce (about 24 oz)
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. 2

Cook pasta 2 minutes less than al dente according to package instructions; drain and set aside.

  3. 3

In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef. Add onion, garlic, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper; cook until onion is soft.

  4. 4

Stir in the marinara sauce and heat through.

  5. 5

Layer half the cooked pasta in a 9x13-inch baking dish, spread half the meat sauce over pasta, and sprinkle with half the mozzarella and Parmesan.

  6. 6

Repeat the layering process with remaining pasta, sauce, and cheeses.

  7. 7

Cover baking dish with foil; bake for 20 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden.

  8. 8

    Serve hot and enjoy!

Chef's tip

Consider adding a ricotta mixture to the cheese layers for extra creaminess, or top with fresh basil after baking for added flavor.
