Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onions
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped bell peppers
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 4 slices of cheddar cheese
  • Lettuce leaves
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Sliced pickles
  • 4 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp relish

Directions

  1. 1

In a large bowl, gently mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onions, bell peppers, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until just combined. Do not overwork.

  2. 2

Divide the mixture into 4 equal parts and shape each into a patty, pressing a thumbprint into the center to ensure even cooking.

  3. 3

Preheat a grill or stovetop skillet to medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 3-4 minutes on each side, until desired doneness. Add cheese slices during the last minute of cooking.

  4. 4

Toast the hamburger buns until golden brown.

  5. 5

Combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, and relish in a small bowl to create the special sauce.

  6. 6

Assemble the burgers: Spread the special sauce on each bun, then layer with lettuce, a patty, tomatoes, and pickles. Top with the bun.

  7. 7

Serve immediately while hot and enjoy the juicy goodness!

Chef's tip

For added flavor, consider using a mix of different cheeses such as Swiss or provolone in addition to cheddar.
