About this recipe

Experience a plant-based twist on a beloved Southern classic with this Vegan Southern Fried Chick'n. Crafted from tofu and a medley of spices, each piece offers a crispy exterior and flavorful interior that will satisfy cravings while keeping things cruelty-free and delicious.

Ingredients

  • 1 block of extra-firm tofu
  • 1 cup of unsweetened plant-based milk
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Oil for frying

Directions

  1. 1

Press and drain the tofu, and cut into desired pieces.

  2. 2

Combine plant-based milk and apple cider vinegar in a bowl to make vegan buttermilk and let it sit for 5 minutes.

  3. 3

Mix flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper in another bowl.

  4. 4

Dip each tofu piece in the flour mixture, then in the vegan buttermilk, and again in the flour mixture.

  5. 5

Heat oil in a skillet to 350°F (175°C).

  6. 6

Fry tofu pieces until golden and crispy, about 3-4 minutes on each side.

  7. 7

    Drain on paper towels.

  8. 8

    Serve immediately.

Chef's tip

Ensure the oil is at the right temperature before frying to achieve perfect crispiness without absorbing too much oil.
