About this recipe

Explore the art of sushi-making with this simplified, yet authentic sushi roll recipe. Perfectly balancing flavors and textures, this dish combines seasoned sushi rice, crisp vegetables, and fresh seafood, all wrapped in nori for a homemade Japanese culinary experience.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sushi rice
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 sheets nori seaweed
  • 1 cucumber, julienned
  • 1 carrot, julienned
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • 8 pieces cooked shrimp
  • Soy sauce for dipping
  • Pickled ginger for serving
  • Wasabi for serving

Directions

  1. 1

Rinse sushi rice under cold water until water runs clear.

  2. 2

Combine rice and water in a pot, bring to a boil, then simmer covered until water is absorbed, about 10 minutes. Let it cool.

  3. 3

Mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a bowl. Stir into cooled rice.

  4. 4

Place nori on a bamboo sushi mat and spread a layer of rice over it, leaving a 1-inch border at the top.

  5. 5

Arrange cucumber, carrot, avocado, and shrimp on the rice.

  6. 6

Roll the nori tightly using the bamboo mat and applying gentle pressure.

  7. 7

Slice the roll into pieces using a sharp knife.

  8. 8

Serve sushi with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi.

Chef's tip

For best results, use a sharp knife to slice the sushi and keep it moist with a damp cloth to prevent sticking.
