Modern Pea and Ham Soup

About this recipe

Experience the heartwarming and nourishing goodness of our modern Pea and Ham Soup, a classic recipe reimagined with vibrant flavors and contemporary cooking techniques. Perfect for family dinners or cozy get-togethers, this soup offers a satisfying blend of tender split peas, savory ham, and aromatic herbs.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound dried split peas
  • 1 ham hock
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. 1

Rinse and drain the split peas, then set aside.

  2. 2

In a large pot, melt butter over medium heat and sauté onion, carrots, and celery until softened.

  3. 3

Add ham hock, chicken broth, water, and bay leaf; bring to a boil.

  4. 4

Reduce heat to low and simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.

  5. 5

Remove the ham hock, shred meat, and discard the bone and fat.

  6. 6

Return shredded ham to the pot and add split peas; simmer for 30 more minutes.

  7. 7

Blend the soup briefly with an immersion blender for a creamy texture (optional).

  8. 8

Season with salt and pepper, and serve hot.

Chef's tip

For a vegetarian version, omit the ham and use vegetable broth instead. This soup pairs well with a fresh, crusty bread.
