Ingredients

  • 1 lb dried split peas
  • 1 ham hock
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Rinse the split peas and set aside.
  • In a large pot, add the ham hock, onion, carrots, celery, chicken broth, water, and bay leaf.
  • Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour.
  • Remove the ham hock from the pot and shred the meat. Discard the bone and fat.
  • Return the shredded ham to the pot and add the split peas.
  • Simmer for an additional 30 minutes or until the peas are tender.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
