Ingredients
- 1 lb dried split peas
- 1 ham hock
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, diced
- 2 celery stalks, diced
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 2 cups water
- 1 bay leaf
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Rinse the split peas and set aside.
- In a large pot, add the ham hock, onion, carrots, celery, chicken broth, water, and bay leaf.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour.
- Remove the ham hock from the pot and shred the meat. Discard the bone and fat.
- Return the shredded ham to the pot and add the split peas.
- Simmer for an additional 30 minutes or until the peas are tender.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve hot and enjoy!
