Modern Old-Fashioned Apple Pie

About this recipe

This modern take on the classic apple pie features a flaky, golden crust and a rich, cinnamon-spiced apple filling. Perfect for any occasion, the pie combines traditional flavors with updated techniques to ensure a perfectly baked dessert every time.

Ingredients

  • 1 double pie crust
  • 6 cups thinly sliced, peeled apples (such as Granny Smith)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sugar for sprinkling

Directions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. 2

Roll out half of the pie crust and place it in a 9-inch pie dish, crimping the edges decoratively.

  3. 3

In a large bowl, combine the apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and flour.

  4. 4

Pour the apple mixture into the prepared crust and dot with cubed butter.

  5. 5

Roll out the remaining pie crust and place over the filling. Seal and crimp the edges.

  6. 6

Cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape. Brush with milk and sprinkle with coarse sugar.

  7. 7

Bake for 45-50 minutes, until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbly.

  8. 8

Allow to cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing and serving.

Chef's tip

For a more robust flavor, try adding a dash of vanilla extract to the apple mixture.
