About this recipe

These modernized Mexican-style ground beef empanadas are the perfect combination of convenience and authentic taste. Using a seasoned beef filling encased in flaky dough, these empanadas can be served as a delicious appetizer or main course. Enjoy the spicy kick and warm, savory goodness wrapped in each bite.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 jalapeno, seeded and diced
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 package refrigerated pie crusts
  • 1 egg, beaten

Directions

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. 2

In a skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat and drain excess fat.

  3. 3

Add onion, garlic, and jalapeno to the skillet; sauté until the onion softens.

  4. 4

Mix in cumin, chili powder, paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper, then allow the mixture to cool slightly.

  5. 5

Unroll pie crusts and cut circles using a 3-inch round cutter.

  6. 6

Place a spoonful of beef mixture on each dough circle, fold in half, and crimp edges with a fork.

  7. 7

Arrange empanadas on the prepared baking sheet and brush with beaten egg.

  8. 8

Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown, then serve hot.

Chef's tip

Ensure the beef mixture is not too wet to avoid soggy dough. Adjust spices to taste for more or less heat.
