Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 1 can tomato sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp dried oregano

  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F.
  • In a large skillet, cook ground beef, onion, and green pepper over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain.
  • Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, garlic powder, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Pour meat mixture into a greased 9-inch deep dish pie plate. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese.
  • In a medium bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • In a small bowl, beat egg, milk, and oil. Stir into dry ingredients just until moistened.
  • Spread batter over meat mixture.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
