Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice
  • 1 cup toor dal
  • 1 medium-sized onion, chopped
  • 1 carrot, chopped
  • 1 potato, diced
  • 1/2 cup green beans, chopped
  • 1/2 cup peas
  • 1 medium-sized tomato, chopped
  • 2 tbsp ghee or oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 4.5 cups water
  • 2 tbsp tamarind pulp
  • 10 curry leaves
  • 1 tbsp peanuts

Directions

    Rinse the rice and dal together until water runs clear.

    Heat ghee or oil in a pressure cooker and add mustard and cumin seeds.

    Once they splutter, add peanuts and curry leaves, sauté until peanuts are golden.

    Add chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.

    Add chopped vegetables and tomatoes, sauté for 3-4 minutes.

    Stir in turmeric, red chili, coriander, cumin powders, garam masala, and salt.

    Add the rinsed rice and dal, tamarind pulp, and 4.5 cups of water. Mix well.

    Seal the pressure cooker and cook for 3 whistles. Allow the pressure to release naturally.

    Open the cooker, mix well, and serve hot with papad and raita.

Chef's tip

This recipe can be adjusted for spice levels by varying the amount of chili powder. For a richer taste, consider using ghee instead of oil.
