Ingredients

  • 1 block extra firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon sriracha
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon minced ginger
  • 1/4 cup chopped scallions

Directions

  1. 1

Press the tofu to remove excess water, then cut into bite-sized pieces.

  2. 2

Combine cornstarch, salt, black pepper, cayenne, garlic powder, and onion powder in a bowl.

  3. 3

Toss tofu pieces in the cornstarch mixture to coat evenly.

  4. 4

Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

  5. 5

Fry tofu until crispy and golden, about 5 minutes each side; remove and drain.

  6. 6

In a separate bowl, whisk soy sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, sesame oil, sriracha, garlic, and ginger.

  7. 7

Return tofu to skillet; pour sauce over tofu, stir to coat, and cook for 2-3 minutes until sauce thickens.

  8. 8

Garnish with scallions and serve immediately.

Chef's tip

For a less spicy version, reduce the sriracha or add a touch of maple syrup to the sauce.
