Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • In a medium saucepan, heat milk and sugar over medium heat until sugar dissolves.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, salt, vanilla extract, and nutmeg.
  • Slowly pour the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture, whisking constantly.
  • Pour the custard mixture into a 9-inch baking dish.

  • Gradually add in 1/4 cup of sugar, beating until the mixture is glossy and stiff.
  • Spread the egg white mixture over the cooled custard.
  • Bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the egg topping is lightly browned.
  • Let the custard cool for at least 30 minutes before serving.
