Ingredients
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- In a medium saucepan, heat milk and sugar over medium heat until sugar dissolves.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, salt, vanilla extract, and nutmeg.
- Slowly pour the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture, whisking constantly.
- Pour the custard mixture into a 9-inch baking dish.
- Place the baking dish in a larger baking pan and fill the larger pan with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the custard dish.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the custard is set but still jiggles slightly in the center.

- In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form.
- Gradually add in 1/4 cup of sugar, beating until the mixture is glossy and stiff.
- Spread the egg white mixture over the cooled custard.
- Bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the egg topping is lightly browned.
- Let the custard cool for at least 30 minutes before serving.
