Ingredients

  • 1 cup sona masuri rice
  • 1/2 cup toor dal (split pigeon peas)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 large tomato, chopped
  • 1 medium carrot, diced
  • 1 drumstick, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 1/2 cup tamarind pulp
  • 2 tablespoons sambar powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 dried red chilies
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 cups water

Directions

    Wash and soak rice and toor dal together for 15 minutes, then drain.

    Heat oil in a pressure cooker; add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, red chilies, and curry leaves. Sauté for a minute.

    Stir in chopped onions and sauté until translucent.

    Add tomatoes and cook until they soften.

    Mix in carrots, drumstick, sambar powder, turmeric, and salt; cook briefly.

    Combine soaked rice and dal with the vegetable mixture.

    Pour in tamarind pulp and water, mix well.

    Pressure cook for 3 whistles or until the rice and dal are soft.

    Allow pressure to release naturally, then gently mix and serve hot.

Chef's tip

For a variation, try adding peas or baby potatoes. Adjust the spice level with more or fewer chilies.
