Ingredients

  • 1 cup toor dal (yellow lentils)
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 large tomato, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons ghee
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped, for garnishing
  • Juice of half a lemon

Directions

    Rinse the toor dal under cold water until the water runs clear.

    In a pressure cooker, combine the dal, 2 1/2 cups of water, and salt. Cook for 4-5 whistles or until soft.

    Heat ghee in a pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.

    Add onions and sauté until golden brown. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for an additional minute.

    Add chopped tomatoes and green chilies. Cook until the tomatoes soften.

    Stir in turmeric, red chili powder, and garam masala, cooking for a few seconds until fragrant.
