- 1 cup yellow lentils (toor dal)
- 2 cups water
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
- 2 green chilies, slit
- 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing
Instructions
- Wash the lentils thoroughly and soak them in water for 30 minutes.
- In a pressure cooker, add the soaked lentils, water, and salt. Cook for 4-5 whistles or until the lentils are soft and mushy.
- Heat ghee or oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute.
- Add chopped tomatoes and green chilies. Cook until the tomatoes become soft and mushy.
- Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and garam masala. Mix well.
- Add the cooked lentils to the pan and mix everything together.
- Simmer the dal fry for 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
- Serve hot with rice or roti.
